Traffic Tickets & DWLS
Most people just pay the ticket. That is a plea of guilty, it puts points on your license, and your insurer will find it.
A Florida traffic citation gives you three options: pay it, elect traffic school where you are eligible, or contest it. Paying is an admission — points are assessed, the conviction goes on your driving record, and your insurance premium generally follows within a renewal cycle or two.
Points and suspension
Florida assigns points by offense, and accumulating them suspends your license: 12 points in 12 months brings a 30-day suspension, 18 points in 18 months brings three months, and 24 points in 36 months brings a year. For drivers who need to drive for work, that arithmetic gets expensive fast.
Driving while license suspended
DWLS is a criminal charge, not a civil infraction, and it escalates quickly — a third offense can be charged as a felony, and repeated convictions can result in designation as a habitual traffic offender with a five-year revocation. Many DWLS cases turn on whether the state can prove you knew your license was suspended, which is a genuine issue far more often than people assume.
Criminal traffic offenses
Some traffic matters are not tickets at all. Reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, racing on a highway and driving without a valid license are criminal offenses carrying jail exposure and a permanent record.

Common questions
Do I have to appear in court for a ticket?
For a civil infraction, usually not — in most cases a lawyer can appear for you. For a criminal traffic charge, your appearance is generally required unless the court excuses it.
Is fighting the ticket worth the fee?
Run the arithmetic over three years. A single moving violation often raises premiums by more than the cost of contesting it, and points compound. For anyone with a CDL or a job that requires driving, it is rarely a close call.
What is traffic school?
Electing a basic driver improvement course withholds adjudication so no points are assessed. It is limited — five times in a lifetime and no more than once in any twelve months — so it is worth saving for when you need it.
I did not know my license was suspended.
Then say so, and say nothing else. Knowledge is an element the state has to prove in a DWLS case, and where notice was never properly given, that is a real defense rather than an excuse.
